Finance for KS1 & KS2

Finance in primary school is all about helping children make sense of money in everyday life โ€” recognising coins and notes, working out change, understanding what it means to save, and starting to think about needs versus wants. At Learnillion, our Finance hub brings these ideas to life through playable activities designed for KS1 and KS2 pupils aged 5 to 11, and carefully aligned to the UK National Curriculum.

You'll find Finance activities organised in three ways: by topic, by year group, and by key stage. That makes it straightforward to find something suitable whether your child is a Year 1 pupil meeting British coins for the first time, a Year 3 learner adding amounts in pounds and pence, or a Year 6 child exploring budgeting, percentages and simple interest. If you're not sure where to start, browsing by year group is usually the quickest route.

Money is one of those subjects that genuinely benefits from being interactive. Children learn far more from dragging coins onto a till, totting up a shopping basket or splitting a budget across categories than they do from reading about it. Our activities give immediate feedback, so mistakes become useful moments rather than dead ends, and the playable format keeps younger learners engaged for longer than a worksheet typically would.

Topics range from identifying coins and notes, counting amounts and giving change in KS1, through to four-operation money problems, converting between pounds and pence, planning a budget and comparing prices in KS2. Along the way, children build the confidence to handle real-world situations โ€” pocket money, school trips, birthday savings โ€” with growing independence.

For parents, the Finance hub offers a practical, curriculum-backed way to support what your child is doing in class, fill any gaps, and give them skills they'll use for the rest of their lives.
